TMS
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
What is TMS?
Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive in-office brain stimulation procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of mental health and addiction conditions. It is FDA cleared for Depression, OCD, and Smoking Addiction.
It is a great option for people who have not benefited from antidepressant medications or cannot tolerate them due to side-effect.
How do I know I am a good candidate for TMS?
In order to be a candidate for Deep TMS, you must have:
A current diagnosis of depression, OCD, or smoking addiction
No history of or recent episodes of seizures
No metal in or around the head (dental work is fine)
History of being on courses of multiple antidepressant medications without sufficient benefit or with intolerable side effects.
Treatment typically consists of 20 minutes sessions across a 4-6 week period, in some cases followed by periodic maintenance sessions.
How long is treatment?
Treatment
Example of common FDA approved protocol.
Risks and Side-Effects
BrainsWay’s clinical trials have demonstrated Deep TMS to be safe and well tolerated for patients. The most common TMS side effects are temporary, mild headaches or discomfort at the treatment site. This typically occurs only within the first week of treatment.
Serious side effects are rare. They may include:
Seizures
Mania, particularly in people with bipolar disorder
Hearing loss if there is inadequate ear protection during treatment
Non-Invasive Treatment
During treatment you will be comfortably sitting in a chair, awake and alert, and can resume normal activities right afterward.
